PRINCIPLES

AUDITION IS NOT FAST.

When you have mastered the basic grammar and vocabulary and only need time to hone to perfection, devote 60% of all time to listening.

LISTENING IS PASSIVE MEMORY.

Listen as much as possible. The more, the better. Especially if you have little language practice.

LISTENING IS POWERFUL!

I will repeat once again the basic law of learning – the better your listening, the better all your skills become: understanding, speaking, grammar, vocabulary.

LISTENING LEVELS

WARNING!
There are always three mandatory requirements for you not to do it: (1) sufficient amount of time, (2) sufficient amount of physical strength, (3) your mood and desire. If you are missing at least one thing, then you better go to sleep.

Your level of listening can be determined by four characteristics. The effectiveness and speed of developing listening skills directly depends on your ability to maintain this balance of four.

1 LEVEL OF VOCABULARY
– 100% familiar words
– 80% familiar words
– 50% familiar words
– there are only familiar letters

2 LEVEL OF GRAMMAR
– I know 100% of the structures
– I know 80% of constructions
– I know 50% of constructions
– stupidly a set of familiar words

3 COMPREHENSIBILITY OF PRONUNCIATION
– I can repeat 100% of words
– I can repeat 80% of the words
– I can repeat 50% of the words
– I can sit down and cry

4 SPEED OF PRONUNCIATION
– I can do it for 100% 
– I can do it for 80%
– I can do it for 50%
– still on the second word

It is precisely on these 4 characteristics that I will describe each exercise. The main thing is to stick to your level, take your time.

1 LEVEL - PREPARED TEXT

STAGE 1. Four hundreds
At this stage, everything should be as comfortable as possible for the student. It is necessary to remove all issues of unfamiliarity with vocabulary and grammar. All the forces of concentration should fall exclusively on the ability to hear and recognize the spoken phrase. That is why all characteristics must be 100%:

1 Vocabulary level – 100% familiar words. Because the teacher (textbook) prepared the text exclusively with already familiar words for the student.

2 Grammar level – 100% familiar constructions. You have already studied all the structures before.

3 Intelligibility of pronunciation – I can repeat 100% of what I heard. Because how else? The teacher specially pronounces everything very clearly, articulating every word.

4 Pronunciation speed – I manage to hear and understand 100% of words. And this is very important. Therefore, the lecturer not only reads everything clearly, but also chooses the speed that is ideal for you.

Conclusion: the combination of a prepared text + a teacher with adjustment to the student is the most effective way of listening, in my opinion. Because everything is controlled. All clear. The result is 100%.

STAGE 2. Two eighties
We do everything exactly the same as in the first stage, but now the teacher does not adjust to the clarity and speed of reading, but does it in a standard manner and speed, as in real life.

1 Vocabulary level – 100%
2 Grammar level – 100%
3 Speech intelligibility – 80-100%
4 Pronunciation speed – 80-100%

As we can see, only the last two indicators are aligned. The teacher stops slowing down and reads the text at normal speed. Or already at this level you can use an audio recording.

2 LEVEL - RANDOM TEXT

There is no text reading before a specific video or audio.

STAGE 1. Thematic videos
At this level, creativity and unexpectedness already begin, but here too we perform the necessary preparation before listening.

The task is to pre-learn vocabulary from a specific topic and activate it by listening to various audio or videos without reading the texts (scripts) themselves.

For example, you are studying the topic Cafe.
Step 1. Study the necessary list of words from this topic for your level.
Step 2 – Start listening to random videos only on that topic, but exclusively for your level. Don’t raise the bar.

Examples of themed videos are anything related to one story.
– TV series (because the episodes are on the same topic)
– educational videos, blogs, reviews (any hobbies: psychology, cooking, music, finance, etc.)
– online broadcasts
– news

STAGE 2. Random videos
Here, the skill of free listening comprehension is already developed. At your level of language proficiency, of course.

The task is simply listening to audio or video without prior preparation and without a specific topic. Whatever happens to you. But again – only at your own level.

Examples of random videos:
– audio books
– feature films and cartoons
– TV show

EXERCISES

1) You watch a video, listen to an audio, listen to a partner read or pre-read the text.
2) The task is to repeat the heard piece as verbatim as possible. We must not only understand, but also consciously reproduce each word and grammatical structure.
3) Depending on the complexity, it can be a different volume: word, phrase, sentence, paragraph.

2) The task is to find as many specific parts of speech as possible. These are usually nouns, adjectives or verbs.
3) Name them orally as you watch or write them down in a notebook.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

You must follow your program clearly. The program is a step-by-step instruction. The amount of time in total for listening and for daily listening is clearly indicated in the program. The time varies depending on your level and current goals.
