1 QUESTIONS

We have 3 ways to build a question:

1) Tu manges? –  Do you eat?
Only add intonation. No need to change anything.
Informal question.

2) Est-ce que tu manges? –  Do you eat?
Add at the beginning phrase “Est-ce que”.
This phrase means “Is it that”. But you should not worry about it. Just remember as a service phrase without translation.

Semi-formal question.

3) Manges-tu? –  Do you eat?
Just put a verb before the subject and add dash “-“.
Good formal quesiton.

Sometimes we add “t” when we ask about him or her. We do it to soften a phrase.
Mange-t-il?
– Does he eat?
Mange-t-elle?
– Does she eat?

Also we often merge words:
1) que + il = qu’il
Est-ce qu’il mange? – Does he eat?

2) que + elle = qu’elle
Est-ce qu’
elle mange? – Does she eat?

3) Que? – what?
Qu’est-ce que tu veux?
Qu’est-ce qu’elle veut?

2 NEGATIONS

To build a negation add “ne…pas” around a verb.

Je ne bois pas. – I don’t drink.
Elle ne boit pas. – She doesn’t drink.

– Tu manges?
– Oui, je mange.
– Non, je ne mange pas.

– Est-ce que tu manges?
– Oui, je mange.
– Non, je ne mange pas.

– Manges-tu?
– Oui, je mange.
– Non, je ne mange pas.

3 TWO VERBS TOGETHER

When we put two verbs together we do the next:
– first verb we change according to the person;
– second verb we do not change at all, take the dictionary form.

Je veux manger.
I want to eat.

Je ne veux pas manger.
I don’t want to eat.

Il veut boire.
He wants to drink.

Il ne veut pas boire.
He doesn’t want to drink.
